Surface Preparation Requirements for Powder Coating

Surface preparation directly affects how well a powder coat finish adheres and how long it lasts in service. Parts with oil, grease, mill scale, or loose rust will not bond properly with the powder, and the finish will fail prematurely. For the best coating adhesion and longevity, parts should arrive at CMV Fabrication clean, dry, and free of surface contaminants. Light surface oxidation on steel is generally acceptable.

Parts with heavy rust, existing paint, or residual machining oils require degreasing, media blasting, or chemical stripping before coating, which adds time and cost to the finishing process. CMV Fabrication advises buyers on surface preparation requirements during the quoting process. Buyers who prepare their own parts before delivery can reduce finishing costs and accelerate turnaround time.
