Common Aluminum Alloys and Their Fabrication Characteristics

Not all aluminum is the same in a fabrication context. The 6061 alloy is among the most commonly fabricated because it balances strength and weldability along with corrosion resistance. The 5052 alloy is more formable and is a frequent choice for sheet metal work and parts with complex bends. Higher-strength alloys like 7075 are more difficult to weld and are typically reserved for machined components.

CMV Fabrication works with the alloys appropriate to each application and can advise on alloy selection when a customer is unsure which suits their project. The alloy choice affects everything from cut quality to weld procedure to how the finished part performs in service.
