How Trapped Air Prevents Groundwater Infiltration in Burial Vaults

Groundwater does not rise uniformly. It fluctuates with rainfall, seasonal water table changes, and local drainage patterns. A burial vault may sit in dry ground for months and then face sustained water contact during a wet season. The air seal inside the vault dome responds to that pressure dynamically. As water rises against the exterior, the air pocket compresses slightly and pushes back, maintaining the pressure differential that keeps water on the outside of the joint.

This mechanism does not depend on any material that degrades. Gaskets can dry out, crack, or lose adhesion over years of ground contact. An air seal relies on physics rather than chemistry. As long as the vault structure remains intact, the seal continues to function.
